Projects delivered by Alan Caldwell Associates

New Venture - Dartington Futures

Imagine This' 'is an exciting new consultancy venture with one of my associates, Simon Hooton of Ash Futures Ltd. Our first project is the creation of the Dartington Futures Network in partnership with the Dartington Hall Trust in Devon. See one of our bulletins here to give you a flavour of this project.

Simon and I believe that the complexities of the 21st century demand new thinking and new approaches. There are trends and issues that are shaping our world and will dramatically change the way we live, work and play in the years to come. It is important that we build our understanding of these issues and take them into account when we are planning for the future. Resources, climate change, population growth and the shift in economic power to the east are but a few of these issues. This requires those in a position of leadership to understand, discuss and plan for the challenges that lie ahead with their organisations and communties.

'Imagine This' has formed a joint venture with the Dartington Hall Trust in Devon to develop a new programme called Dartington Futures. The first part of this programme, the Dartington Futures Network was launched this month. The Dartington Hall Trust is a pioneering charity - a place of experiment, enterprise and education where the arts, social justice and sustainabilty come together. Based in Totnes in Devon, the trust occupies a 1200 acre estate and Dartington Hall has become a centre of creative thinking over the years. Offering wonderful meeting rooms, accomodation, cafes and restaurants it is the perfect place to bring people together in a creative  and relaxing environment.

The Dartington Futures Network is for senior people from across the south west of England.  They will participate in facilitated seminars to inform, challenge and discuss specific issues. We will hold network meetings, focussed on a chosen topic, to bring members together to discuss hard issues. We are hosting an online network and encouraging peer and action learning. A regular bulletin to inform and connect has been launched.

We already have an exciting programme of seminars lined up involving some of Europe's leading thinkers on topics from the future of food, farming and land to living with low (or no) economic growth. Our guest speakers include (for example):

  • Jonathan Porritt: Founder Director of Forum for the Future: former chair of the Sustainable Development Commission; Chancellor of Keele University; author and broadcaster.
  • Geoff Mulgan: CEO of BESTA; former CX of the Young Foundation; co-founder of Demos: Director of the PM's Strategy Unit; author and broadcaster.
  • Matthew Taylor: CEO of the Royal Society of the Arts; former Director of IPPR; former Chief Political Advisor to Tony Blair; journalist and commentator.
  • Prof Jules Pretty; Pro-vice chancellor of Essex University and member of serveral Government Advisory Boards.
