Projects delivered by Alan Caldwell Associates

Sustainabilty South West

SSW is the independent Champion Body for sustainability in the South West of England. This year's summit held in July focused on how the organisation would need to change and adapt to this new age of austerity.  Facilitating the two-day residential event, Alan helped the staff and board to think through a new direction for the charity.

'We were impressed with Alan and his facilitation style. Alan provided well structured sessions that really engaged our Board Members who represent a very wide range of sectors.  Alan clearly understood our objectives and his process precipitated useful observations, conclusions and a plan of action for further development. Alan was able to steer discussions within a group of smart, demanding participants and demonstrated a sensitive and inclusive approach.' Leslie Watson, Director

The summit was structured to lead everyone through a rigorous process of review and forward planning.  The first day looked at future scenarios and included 'think pieces' on the latest regional, national and global issues influencing sustainable development and those working in this field.  Facilitated group sessions then explored whether the future scenarios 'stacked up' from the participants own experience.  We explored what effect the 'new era of austerity' might have on the sustainability agenda and, given the answers to these questions, what can an organisation like SSW do to best connect with future challenges.

The second day assessed the options for the evolution of SSW.  After recapping on the challenges identified on day 1 we reminded ourselves of the recognised strengths and constraints of SSW.  Workshops then explored a series of questions.  How should we evolve to take on new challenges and what models are good options for us?  How do we approach our identity; geographical reach; audience; stakeholders; partners and resource base? What income generating opportunities exist for our organisation?  We rounded of this session by agreeing a programme of tasks for staff and board members to advance in the remaining 8 months of core funding.

Sessions were broken up with activities and socialising and staff and board are now busy working on the agreed way forward for SSW.
