Projects delivered by Alan Caldwell Associates

The Market & Coastal Towns Initiative for the South West of England

The MCTi, designed by Alan Caldwell Associates, was given national recognition at the Royal Town Planning Institute’s awards ceremony in London on the 3rd February 2005 as winner of the Sustainable Communities Award.

The MCTi helps local people to secure the long-term health of their towns and surrounding villages and is already producing impressive results. Local people are preparing their own plans and establishing their own companies to take a direct stake in their future. Projects range from affordable housing to renewable energy, new workspaces to the creation of community owned businesses. Already around £30 million has been invested in projects prioritised in the community plans.

Supported by government agencies, Local Authorities, charitable foundations and private corporations, the judging panel highlighted MCTi as a "a model of good practice that deserves widespread acknowledgement of how to achieve community planning at the local level. Vibrant and healthy communities will only come about if they believe in themselves and have ownership of their future. This initiative makes this happen." Award winners in other categories included the redesign of Trafalgar Square and the Bullring in Birmingham.

As lead consultants from 2000-2003, Alan Caldwell Associates have been at the heart of this work. More recently they have been appointed to support the new Association created to manage and promote the MCTi.
